The night receptionist handed me a slip of paper. "The volunteer chaplain would like to meet with you. This is her extension number/'

Her? The hospital chaplain was a woman? I was tired, exhausted really, after a full ten hours supervising my son's third day of intensive therapy at Craig Rehabilitation Hospital. I was certainly not in the mood to explain—for what seemed like the thousandth time—the accident that brought us here.

"Maybe tomorrow," I muttered, ducking into the crisp night air. Street lamps lit my path across the pedestrian walkway, but cast deep shadows as thick as those weighing down my heart. At the guest apartment door, I fumbled with unfamiliar locks and tumbled into bed without even washing my face or brushing my teeth.

The next morning a different receptionist handed me another slip of paper, "The hospital chaplain wants to ..."
